Tallinn in July

Tallinn, Estonia, JULY 2006

A quick escape with the family to Tallinn. It always amazes me hw much the city and whole country have changed in past fifteen years. My first visit was in springtime 1992, when the Estonia had just got back its indepence. Each visit after that have shown incredible development in infrasturcture, landscape, economy, etc...

This summer the novelty was the huge number of tourist from large Baltic cruise ships visiting day in Tallinn old town. There were large groups at least from Italy, Germany, USA, UK and Japan. Maybe due this huge number of internatonal travellers with variable language skills, even my terrible Estonian was received well in local shops and bars - although The Estonians in Tallinn speak generally way much better Finnish that I can do Estonian.

Summer is here

The long awaited summer holiday starts soon.
Finland will practically close for July....

Longyearbyen

16.-18.6.2006

Pipsa and I went to celebrate our 7th wedding day to romantic Longyearbyen, Svalbard. It is 1200 km from North Pole and only due Golf Stream it's possible to live there. Longyearbyen was suprisingly active place with close to 2000 inhabitants. There are a lot of young families and children, as well as two international class hotels. The scenery was breathtaking and one could really feel the power of the nature. In summer time the day was endless, only the direction of the sun indicated whether it was day or "night".

Great place to visit!

Adventdalen, view towards Longyearbyen.

Scotland - almost ten years ago (republish)

These photos and text were part of early mobile blogging test. I send all the texts and images with Nokia 9000 Communicator with GSM Data connection while on the trip.

At the time of trip there were no GSM coverage in Outer Hebrids, at least not for roaming. The situation must have been improved quite a bit ever since.

27.8.1998 at 11:27 pm, Helsinki Starting the trip from a Irish bar called Parnel's. Brasil leads Chile 4-1 in worldcup semifinals.

28.6.1998 just after midnight, Helsinki

After a successful comedia performance by Kana at a local
snack grill i.e snäkäri, Timo rested peacefully.
We decided not to take that informative sign with us, although
it might have been useful in making first impression in B&B's.

28.6.1998 at 10.05 am, London Gatwick

Timo wanted to revenge the previous picture by taking this picture.
Unfortunately there is no warning sign of the possible hazards.
By the way, the flight to Glasgow is already late due some technical
difficulties, whatever they are. Also these people here want to destroy our bags
and they just wait us to leave them unattended.
At least that they say in the repeated announcements.

28.6.1998 Glasgow Finally a bar with student discounts! Good music playing loud
and football on a big screen.

29.6.1998 Glasgow

This statue is from the exhibition
in the museum of modern art.
It's called Eric ;-)

30.6.1998 Eilean Donan Castle

Nice summer cottage, we'll take it.
This is the most photograhphed castle
in Skotland. It's also the one from the film
Highlander.
This was also the last place with GSM connection
before the Hebridian islands. Sorry about delay :-)

1.7.1998 Duntulm Castle

Thisused to be the place for the clan
MacDonald. It was cursed when a clumsy
babysitter dropped a baby from a window.

2.7.1998 Stornoway, Isle of Lewis

A castle a day keeps boys happy.
This one belonged to a opium smuggler

3.7.1998 Callanish, Isle of Lewis

No castle today, but at least some old stones.

3.7.1998 Lewis Lounge, Stornoway

Mogo and Blondie - local boys with a good attitude.
'There's two things a Highlander likes naked and
the other one is malt whisky.'

5.7.1998 Loch Ness This castle could be perfect for fishing.
It comes with piper and everything

5.7.1998 Loch Ness

We managed to get a picture of the monster.
Unfortunaly it disappeared before better angle.

6.7.1998 Edinburgh

Timo meets Haggis.

6.7.1998 Edinburgh

One castle, two castles, many castles

7.7.1998 Edinburgh

And after we walked to the Royal Mile,
we bumped into an old friend and we decided
to have a few drinks. Which was nice.
